I’m counting down the top ten players who have made me laugh and (almost) cry since the start of the Premier League. OMB’s Top Ten Premier League Entertainers… #8 Paolo Di Canio

I’m counting down the top ten players who have made me laugh and (almost) cry since the start of the Premier League. The list doesn’t only take into account how these players performed on the field, it also takes into account how they performed off the field too… This week and in at number 9, Paolo Di Canio.

The first player from foreign shores to hit my ten most entertaining Premier League players is Italian, Paolo Di Canio. The fiery striker’s passion and flare were present in England for 7 years, winning fans for his style of play and unpredictability.

I Was There… Portsmouth 0-1 Fulham, Premier League, 11/05/2008

Me again, Dan Walsh, author of One Match Ban. For my second ‘I Was There…’ I recall the match that saw Fulham save their Premier League status on the final day of the season.

The drama of the 2007/2008 Premier League run-in was, for Fulham fans, an emotional rollercoaster full of nail-biting tension and then ultimately relief, as the west London club beat the odds to avoid relegation on the final day of the season.

The Killer Pass: Top Ten Barca Assists So Far This Season (part 2)

There have been some pretty special goals by Barcelona this season. Those who have scored them have been deservedly lauded for their success, but as much as a great goal gives me joy, a great assist can get me leaping out of my chair too. This season Barca seem to be specialists in finding the ‘killer pass’, a pass that splits open defences in the blink of an eye. These passes are often only visualised by the player who makes the pass. Those in the crowd, those watching at home and most importantly those playing for the opposition don’t see it until it has happened and usually, when the ball is in the back of the net.

So check out part two of One Match Ban’s ‘Top Ten Barca Assists So Far This Season’ and appreciate the art of the killer pass…

5. Pedro to Messi, Barcelona 1-1 Mallorca, Primera Liga, 03/10/2010

This is a chance created out of nowhere. Messi starts with the ball on the half way line, releases the ball to Dani Alves who casually plays the ball to Pedro. The Mallorca defenders are fully expecting the Barca no. 17 to take a touch, hold and wait for support. As if having eyes in the back of his head, Pedro, draws in two defenders and backheels the ball into the path of Messi, who finds himself in enough space to beat the keeper.

10. Xavi to Messi, Barcelona 5-0 Real Betis, Copa Del Rey, 12/01/2011

A goal which goes to show that having an organised back four and playing a high back-line doesn’t really matter against Messi. Xavi sees the run early and times his pass to perfection for the World Player of the Year to score Barca’s third in a five goal beating of Betis.

OMB’s Top Ten Premier League Entertainers… #9 Matt Le Tissier

I’m counting down the top ten players who have made me laugh and (almost) cry since the start of the Premier League. The list doesn’t only take into account how these players performed on the field, it also takes into account how they performed off the field too… This week and in at number 9, Matt Le Tissier.

You may consider it an insult that after the goal-scoring exploits of Matt Le Tissier during his Southampton career, he is at lowly ninth place in this list. I say, that due to the fact that I am also taking into account off field antics in this list, it is a testament to his on-field ability that he finds a place in the top ten.
